2009
Grandchild The year 2008 started well for our family, our daughter Margret and her fiancé Sæþór had their first child, a son born on the 6th of January. So we are now proud grandfather and grandmother. Of course the parents are also very proud of their handsome son who was given the name Birnir Snær.

New stable. We started building a new stable in October 2008 so by the beginning of 2009 the stable was already half-finished. The carpenters and other tradesmen kept on with the assignment and the household made their contribution mostly at the end with the painting and other smaller tasks.

The stable was ready on the 6th of June and our main stallion Forseti had the privilege to be the first horse to enter the stable. The stable consists of 25 single pens and one bigger pen for around 12 youngsters. Besides there is a tack room, entrance, living chambers and a bathroom. We are very happy with our new facilities, the stable and the indoor arena which was built the year before.

Horse training. We have had horses for training since June last year. There have been trainers from Iceland and Sweden working for us, some of which have been in vocational training from Dille Gård and Vången in Sweden.

Sigurbjörg has got a new competition horse since her former competition mare Evita is now used for breeding. Sigurbjörg has participated in training the horses and last summer she competed on her new horse Blossi in Smáris club competition. There she ended up in first place with the score 8,31.

Foals born in 2009. All in all there were born 15 foals in Vorsabær last spring, 11 males and 4 females. We have had great pleasure in watching them grow and flourish and observe their talents. Many of the foals are for sale and we have already sold two of them.

Breeding. The horse breeding in Vorsabær continues and last summer we took 18 mares to stallions 15 of which are in foal. We had the stallion Hlekkur frá Lækjarmót on a field here in Vorsabær and he got 7 of our mares. We used also another stallion for breeding here, the two years old Stirnir from Vorsabær, whom we have great expectations to. Stirnir is from our own breeding sired by Stali from Kjarr and Kolbrún frá Vorsabær. Some 5 mares were taken to other good stallions. It will be interesting to see the results next summer.

Tourism. We have been quite busy accommodating tourists. Some have come with their children for a shorter visit to introduce them to the domestic animals. Others, mostly foreign tourists, have stayed for a longer time in our guest horse and taken horse rides during the day.

Here in Vorsabae 2 a lot of improvement has been made. This summer we finished building a big riding arena. It is great to have the possibility to train the horses even when the weather is bad.

We have built a new and better stable for the sheep and goats, where they feel good.

Now we are in the middle of building the horse stable, when finished it will have 25 one-horse-pens and in addition there will be room for 16 youngsters. Of course there will be a tack room and a nice place to drink coffee and anything you might need in a horse stable.

We have placed a guesthouse next to our own house. That brings the possibility to offer accommodation for people who are interested in experiencing life on an Icelandic farm. In this way you can combine recreation with learning something new. In the guesthouse there are two double bedrooms and a big loft where up to 10 people can sleep on mattresses. The kitchen has all basic cooking-equipment. There is a big living room and a terrace. The visitors can also choose to take their meals together with the family in our home. You can decide your own level of participation in the daily activities on the farm. You have the chance to ride different horses or learn how we train them. You will meet the Icelandic horse in its original surroundings.
If you are looking to buy a horse you can try out several until you are sure you have found the right one.

This year 12 foals were born. 6 stallions and 6 fillies. We brought 17 mares to stallions and 15 of them are confirmed pregnant. The stallions we used this year are:
Forseti from Vorsabæ 2, Segull from Hátúni, Hágangur from Narfastaðir, Stáli from Kjarri, Grunnur from Grund, Stæll from Neðra-Seli, Öfjörð from Litlu_Reykir, and Hlekkur from Lækjarmót.
Some of them are young and have not yet been judged others are famous breeding stallions.

Our daughter Sigurbjörg has been working a lot with the horses this year. Among other things she has competed on the mare Evita at several occasions with fine results. In August Erlingur Erlingsson showed Evita at a breeding show and she got first price with the points: 8.15.

24.Nov.2007   We have started building the new stable complex. The stable will have room for 35 to 40 horses. In connection with the stable there will be a little three bedroom flat.Next to the stable we will have a
16 X 42 metres arena and a stable for the sheep.
We are working on the buildings and have got help from some builders from Selfoss. We are making good progress and we hope that all our animals will have a roof over their head before Christmas.

We are now finished building our new round pen. We have also built another pen and have torn down the old one.

22.sept.2007   We have now torn down the old horse and sheep stables to make room for the new stable complex. They sheep stable was built by Björn’s father Jon. The horse stable was built by the father of Jon before that. Many good horses have passed through the stable and we think it is fair to say that it has stood its time well.

20.sept.2007   In September we closed the sale of our farm Bránstadir. We owned Brjánstadir for 6 years, in which time we have been training the horses from there. We have been very satisfied with Brjánstadir, but time has come to build up new stables in our farm Vorsabæ where we live. The new owner at Brjánstadir is Einar Sigurdsson.

10.Sept.2007   On the 10th of September our new employee Micaela Aahlberg arrived from Sweden. Micaela has been helping us with training the horses and other farm-work. In December she returns to Sweden. We have been very pleased with her work.

26.August   We have set up a new 5x6 metres shelter. It was easy to set up. We completed the work in only two days. We have put the goats in there for now. They do not manage well outside in the cold autumn weather. Therefore it is good to know that they have a roof over their heads while we complete the work on the new stable complex.

17.August 2007   I got a letter from Martha in Norway last winter. She had Gassa at her farm in the summer 2005. She wrote. "He has turned to be a little grey in his face, but do you not think he still looks good? Every day he was taken out from his mares to get some extra food. I just clapped my hands. On there he comes, always in tølt.Then he wanted to take a sand bath. After food and bath I opened the gate, and he could go back to his mares. We became very good friends, me and Gassi."

Summer 2007   We've started hay-making, and the first grass was cut 26th June. It's a lot of work and the weather hasn't always been fair. Now it's been dry for a long period and therefor the grass growth hasn't been much, but after we started to cut the grass, the dryness hasn't always been safe so it's hard to dry the hay. Everything will succeed in the end, like all other summers before.

Our other mares we've taken to stallions are: Hrina and Gasaleg-Skutla have been to Forseti. Syrpa, Skvetta and Nóta are with Segull. Drottning and Slaufa is with Helmingur from Hlemmiskeið. Hrefna is in insemination at Stáli from Kjarri and she's positive. Molda went to Sædynur from Múli, who's 4 years and a 1st prize horse by Dynur from Hvammur.
  Segull
Alda foaled a black pinto colt with blue in both eyes. She's now with Forseti. Tign foaled a bay filly by Hágangur from Narfastaðir. Tign is now with Eldjárn from Tjaldhólar. Prinsessa foaled a bay filly by Kostur (a son of Forseti). Prinsessa is now with Segull, who's a 4 winters potential stallion we own.Gletta foaled a palamino pinto colt by Heiðar from Austurkot. She's now with Segull.
  Daughter to Tign
Snerpa foaled a black colt by Flygill from Horn. Snerpa is now with Dugur from Þúfa, who went to 1st place last spring, only 4 years old. He's the son of Orri from Þúfa. Hviða foaled a black filly with a blaze and white socks on both hind legs. The foal is by Kostur, a young son of Forseti, who's now in Sweden. We've taken Hviða to Forseti again. Kolbrún foaled a blue dun colt by Stál from Kjarr and then she went to Dugur from Þúfa, like Snerpa.
  Daughter to Hviða
Kolfreyja foaled a bay colt by Forseti. Kolfreyja is foal again by Kjarni from Þjóðólfshagi. Slaufa foaled a chestnut colt with blaze by Forseti. Slaufa is now at Helmingur from Hlemmiskeið (a young son of Álfur from Selfoss). Nös foaled a bay filly with a star by Forseti and has now again gone to Forseti.
  Son by Slaufa
All foals are born for this year, 10 altogether. 6 of them are colt and 4 filly. We've gotten our mares to stallions for next years foals. The breeding goes on, but it's always a brown study to choose stallions for our mares.
  Kolfreyja and her son
Forseti is now home with a group of mares, both from us and other horse owners. Segull is also home with a few mares, both from us and others. We're looking forward to seeing his foals next year, considering how beautiful they are we've seen so far.
  Segull and Brynjar
We have taken 1 mare to breeding show. Her name's Molda and she got 7.89 for conformations 8.15 for riding ability and 8.08 total score.
  Molda and Jóhann Ragnarson
There's always something going on here and always enough to do.Now we're taming and training 28 horses. To assist us we have two employees. One of them is an Icelandic boy, Davíð Bragason who's from Selfoss, and the other one is a girl from Finland, Julia Kunttu.

During the Holliday we took in the four year olds (born in 2002) and a few older horses, which where broken in last winter. We now have 24 shoed horses in the stable so there is lots of work to do riding and feeding the horses. Most of the horses we are training at the moment are offspring by Forseti. We are very satisfied with how they are coming on. Nanna Mikkelsen from Denmark, who has worked for us since September, is leaving by the end of March. We will be looking for someone to come and help train our horses after March.

In November and December we began to break in the three year old horses (born 2003). We taught them in the lunge, lifted up their feet and put saddle on them for the first time. After that we rode them a little bit in the arena. That all went very well so we have put them back on the pasture for the rest of the winter.
